WEast 2026 Belgrade Workshop - Call for Papers

09. Apr 2026.

The Institute of Economic Sciences, Institute for Recent History of Serbia, European Historical Economics Society, and WEast will organise the WEast 2026 Belgrade Workshop, taking place on 26-27 August 2026 in Belgrade. The workshop is dedicated to long-run economic growth and development in East, Central, and South-East Europe.

The workshop focuses on exploring the drivers of long-run economic growth and development in the region across different historical periods. At its core are contributions examining the economic, social, political, institutional, and cultural factors that have shaped the region's development over the long run. We welcome submissions drawing on a variety of approaches and methodologies from different disciplines, including economic and business history, economics, and political science.

Professor Jared Rubin (Chapman University) will deliver the keynote lecture. The workshop will feature a limited number of presentations in order to encourage in-depth discussion among participants. We particularly encourage submissions from PhD candidates and early career researchers.

We invite researchers to submit full papers or extended abstracts, along with a CV, by 15 May 2026 to weast2026belgrade@gmail.com. Preference will be given to full papers. Authors will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by the end of May 2026.
