On September 1, 2023 our colleague from the Institute for Recent History of Serbia Natalija
Dimić Lompar defended her PhD thesis entitled “Divided Germany and Yugoslavia
(1945–1966): Political Relations during the Cold War“ at the History Department of the Faculty
of Philosophy in Novi Sad.

The thesis defense committee members were:

the thesis supervisor Prof. Đorđe Đurić.

The second issue of Currents of History for 2023 has been published. It consists of scholarly papers dealing with the interwar business elite and diplomacy, Yugoslav-Bulgarian issues, the Trepča mine, “Young Muslims”, rivalry in the Non-Aligned Movement and much more.

Currents of History is an academic journal of the Institute for Recent History of Serbia, that publishes academic articles, essays, polemics, reviews, information on conferences, and historical sources related to the contemporary history of Serbia, Yugoslavia, and the Balkans.

Colleague Jovan Čavoški, Ph.D., was in Beijing during July, and on that occasion a cooperation agreement was signed with the Center for the Study of Civilizations from Beijing (Center for Study of Civilizations, Capital Normal University).  It is one of the leading Chinese scientific institutions dedicated to the study of the contemporary Balkans.

The contract was signed by Jovan Čavoški from the side of Institute for Recent History of Serbia and the Director of the Center Professor Liang Zhanjun.

During his stay, colleague Čavoški had numerous meetings with various members of the Chinese academic community. These are colleagues from several academic and scientific institutions from Beijing and Shanghai. During the meetings, colleague Jovan discussed the possibilities of further cooperation, as well as the possible signing of a contract on cooperation between the Institute for Recent History of Serbia and Chinese academic and scientific institutions.

Colleague Čavoški received his doctorate in 2014 at the University of Beijing, and in 2022 he published the capital book "Non-Aligned Movement Summits" at Bloomsbury Academic.

On Tuesday, May 10, 2023, in the ceremonial hall (434) on the 4th floor of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, there will be a promotion of the publications of the Institute for the Recent History of Serbia.

Dr. Mile Bjelajac, director of INIS, Dr. Bojan Simić, editor of the "studies and monographs" edition, Dr. Zoran Janjetović, president of the scientific council of INIS, Dr. Dmitar Tasić, Dr. Sanja Petrović Todosijević and Dr. Aleksadnar R. Miletic.

The promotion will be opened at 11:30 a.m. by Dr. Dejan Antić, associate professor of the history at the department of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš.

U utorak 9. maja 2023. u Holu Narodnog muzeja u Leskovcu održaće se promocija izdanja Instituta za noviju istoriju Srbije iz Beograda.

Na promociji će govoriti dr Mile Bjelajac, direktor INIS-a, dr Bojan Simić, urednik edicije "studije i monografije", dr Zoran Janjetović, predsednik naučnog veća INIS-a, dr Dmitar Tasić, dr Sanja Petrović Todosijević, dr Aleksadnar R. Miletić.

The first issue of Currents of History for 2023 has just been released.

It consists of scholarly papers on Russian energy policy in the Balkans, social insurance and diplomatic service in the Yugoslav kingdom, ideological collaboration, industrial development, Tito's diplomacy, emigration and subversive propaganda in socialism, the breakup of SFRY and much more.

Currents of History is an academic peer-reviewed journal of the Institute for Recent History of Serbia that publishes original scholarly articles, essays, polemics, reviews, information on conferences, and historical sources related to the contemporary history of Serbia, Yugoslavia, and the Balkans.

On April 25, 2023, the Institute for Recent History of Serbia had the opportunity to organize a promotion and discussion about the Edited Volume (video):

"China, Yugoslavia and Socialist Worldmaking: Convergences and Divergences" (Koper: Science and Research Center, Annales ZSR, 2023).

 The anthology was prepared by Zvonimir Stopić, Jure Ramšak, Liang Zandzun and Jože Pirjevec.

 The promotion was opened and the participants were introduced by Dr. Božica Slavković-Mirić. Dr. Zvonimir Stopić spoke about the project itself, its significance, challenges in making the Volume, while Dr. Jovan Čavoški spoke about the content of the collection itself and new knowledge about the importance of China and Yugoslavia in the Cold War and their bilateral relations.

The Australian Embassy and the Institute for Recent History of Serbia are organizing the promotion of the book Australians with Serbs in the First World War.  

The promotion will be held at the Historical Museum of Serbia on Wednesday, April 26 at 6 p.m. (Trg Nikole Pašića 11).  

Author of the book, Mr Bojan Pajić, is Australian military historian of Serbian descent. The book represents up until now unknown study of about 1500 Australians and New Zealanders in the battles on the Serbian battlefield during the First World War, a topic that has rarely been a subject of a research until now, either in Anglo-Saxon or Serbian historiography.

The book represents a wonderful testimony of the long-term friendship between Serbia and Australia.

At the promotion speakers will be:

-          Daniel Emery - His excellency Ambassador of Australia to Serbia

-          Bojan Pajić– author of the book

-          Mile Bjelajac – Director of the Institute for the new history of Serbia and

-          Katie Hancock and Richard Cook – descendants of Australians who participated in the First World War in Serbia

The book has been translated and printed by the Australian Embassy in 1000 copies, and with the help of the Institute for the Recent History of Serbia, it will be distributed to libraries throughout Serbia.

The new book by professor PhD. Aleksej Timofeev deals with the analysis of the disappearance of the Russian emigration in Yugoslavia from the beginning of the Second World War to 1954. The book deals with the study of Russian emigration during two turbulent periods - the Second World War and the post-war conflict of Yugoslavia with the USSR and its allies.

The third issue of Currents of History for 2022 has been published. It consists of scholarly papers in English dealing with the Roma Holocaust, ethnic migrations during the 1950s, informal practices in Southeast Europe, historiography on capitalism and many more.

On Friday, April 15, 2022, in the premises of the National Museum in Čačak, a collection of works "80 Years Since the Outbreak of World War II in Yugoslavia and the Suffering of theCity of Kragujevac: New Advances or Revision of History" was presented by the Center for Scientific Research of Srpska Academy of Sciences and Arts and the University of Kragujevac and the Institute for Recent History of Serbia. The collection was edited by Dr. Dmitar Tasić, senior research associate of INIS and Lela Vujošević.

Within the collection there are four thematic units of the Collection (Revisionism; Genocide and Culture of Memory; Under Occupation; International Context). . Mraović, Rade Ristanović, Aleksandar Stojanović, Miloš Timotijević, Milana Živanović, Zoran Janjetović, Miljan Milkić and Aleksandar Rakonjac.

The international workshop was held at the Institute for Recent History of Serbia (INIS) on 10-11 April 2022. Dr. Vladan Jovanović, principal research fellow at INIS, participated as a chair and the one of the organizers of this interdisciplinary project, while Ognjen Tomić, a trainee researcher at INIS, presented his paper during the second day of the workshop. The participants from Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Albania, and Serbia were greeted by Dr. Mile Bjelajac, director of the Institute for Recent History of Serbia.
